Is there any good alternative word for “explicated”or is this sentence good as it is?: “Given the important relation between parenting and depression, the relation is explicated in the developmental theory of depression.

The word "explicated" is awkward. I'm a native English speaker in the US, and I don't know what it means offhand. This word should be avoided, because most English speakers would not know its meaning and would have to run for a dictionary, which is very inconvenient. In the given sentence an alternative would be: discussed/covered at length.
