00The following comes from a test done a few days ago.02br
02br
02br
00 We were on vacation at my parents' place in Phoenix, glad to be away from the bitter Edmonton winter. Our two boys, in their early teens, were demanding of everyone's time and attention. When it was suggested we (A)[go / went] to the shopping mall, everybody but my wife was enthusiastic. She begged off, insisting she (B)[want / wanted] to get some baking done that afternoon. We found out later, in the absence of any new cookies or cakes, that (C)[what / when] she had meant was indeed "baking" alone in the 80 degree sunshine. 02br
02br
00 (A) 00 00 00 00(B) 00 00 00 00(C) 02br
02br
00① go 00 00 00want 00 00 00what 02br
02br
00② go 00 00 00want 00 00 00when 02br
02br
00③ go 00 00 00wanted 00 00 00what 02br
02br
00④ went 00 00want 00 00 00when 02br
02br
00⑤ went 00 00wanted 00 00 00what 02br
02br
02br
00It says The answer is ③. 02br
02br
02br
00But I think it's only right in American English.02br
02br
00But one grammar book, Advanced English Practice, says 'went' is possible in this case.02br
02br
00According to the BOOK, 02br
02br
02br
02br
00❶ 'Should' is often used in a 'that' clause, after verbs like suggest, recommend, require, decide, ect.:02br
02br
02br
02br
00❷ 'Should' is sometimes omitted.02br
02br
02br
02br
00❸ The verb from is then sometimes 'regularized' to give the 'normal' sequence of tenses:02br
02br
00 I suggested (that) he 01b01u00took02u02b00 legal advice.02br
02br
02br
00So, I think in "When it was suggested we (A)[go / went] to the shopping mall" 'went' is also possible instead of 'go.' So ⑤ is also a correct answer.02br
02br
02br
00Am I right?02br
02br
02br
00(I also have another example of past tense in that clause.02br
02br
