Sugar conscious

Hi,
Today during lunch time at work we've been discussing a long term effects of sugar rich diet. At some stage I used an expression that I'm "a sugar-conscious" person, to the (apparent) amusement of my workmates. I am not a native speaker myself, so I often rely on native speakers I work with and talk to. Is "sugar conscious" such a funny mistake to be made? It's UK English we're talking about.
Thank you.

Thank you GPY.
We all work for an engineering company, so strictly speaking, grammar is not our forte :-). I am Polish, has been living in Ireland for the past ten years.

This seems to be one of those cases where "you had to be there". I've never heard the term "sugar conscious", but I've heard enough similar expressions that I would probably not find it amusing in itself. I wouldn't consider it "a funny mistake". The amusing part was probably in the way the expression came up in the conversation or maybe exactly how or when you said it.

I was puzzled myself, because it definitelly wasn't the way I said it nor the context. I was just looking at the can of a fizzy drink and said that I always look at the sugar content as I am sugar-conscious. Then two sentences later, one of the lads came back with "did you say concious? Never heard sugar concious before, it doesnt exist, hahahah". You see I still make errors, it is inevitable for

It happens quite often that native speakers think they know more about their own language than they really do, so sometimes a native speaker is the last person you want to ask about it.

Hundreds of Google hits from apparently competent native speakers say otherwise.
