Grammar

such, such a, and a such

Hi,

Can you give me some examples and the corresponding explanation regarding the usage of these three, "such", "such a", and "a such."

Top answer

I cannot think of a good use for a such (googling it reveals nothing in the first few pages but errors for such a ). Such is for plurals and uncountables: They are such good friends; I've never seen such snow . Such a is for singular countables: He is such a good friend; I am such a coward .

Hi MM,

I agree to your point about the usage of "a such". Do these examples make sense?

(1) I have never heard about "Double Inheritance" .Is there a such thing as "Double Inheritance"?

(2) Is there a such concept as reincarnation?

To me they do not, rishonly-- they should read such a. Although googling will produce many of those, I think the form is a result of illiteracy.

PS: Of course, if enough people keep using it, it will eventually end up as proper grammar, will I, nill I.

You are right that Google gives 1.9 million results for the pattern "a such". Thanks for the correction, anyway.

That is such a big number of hits that I just took another look throught the googled results, rishonly, and a lot of them are mathematical:

well known is the fact that there can be no larger value of A such that PA (A -2) = A-1

As well, there are a lot of these:

A. Such collector shall report to the municipal officers at the end of the munici

Points well taken, MM. I agree that Internet is not reliable medium to assess grammar rules.
