Such discussion or such a discussion

Hi. Let's say some college students had a heated discussion on gender equality. Now, an old man who had been listening for a short while said, "I think you need to have such discussion / such a discussion in a public forum setting." Now, I think both phrases "such discussion" and "such a discussion" are correct in what he said. Are both correct? If not, which is correct? Thank you in advance for your help.

"Such a discussion" is correct. "Such discussion" is ungrammatical. When in doubt about whether or not to include an article (definite or indefinite), always put the article in.

  • "Such a discussion" is correct.

  • English, especially American English, is very article-heavy, so the odds are heavily in your favor if you put the article in.
  • Also, non-native speakers love to drop articles, since they don't even exist in many languages.

It is perfectly grammatical if you use 'discussion' uncountably.
Anonymousalways put articles in when in doubt.
Only if you are sure that you are dealing with countable nouns.
