1-How much did great scientists, such as Galileo and Newton, rely on their imagination?
2-How much did great scientists such as Galileo and Newton rely on their imagination? 3-How much did such great scientists as Galileo and Newton rely on their imagination?
Do these sentences mean the same?
I think in '1', Galileo and Newton are presented as examples of great scientists. Here 'such as' means 'for example'.
It seems to me that in the other two sentences there is a subcategory of 'great scientist' that is defined. Not all great scientists but the ones who fit in the same category as Newton and Galileo.
However it seems to me that '2' is sometimes used instead of '1'.
Am I correct here?
Gratefully, Navi.
