Such as

Is there a difference between
a. Great novelists such as Flaubert and Dickens used this method.
and
b. Great novelists, such as Flaubert and Dickens, used this method.
?

I think (a) is the same as
c. Such great novelists as Flaubert and Dickens used this method.

So we have a subcategory of the category 'great novelist'. We are talking about a particular kind of 'great novelist' and not about all of them.
But in (b) 'such as just means 'for example'.

I am not sure that (a) is not ambiguous.

Many Thanks.

Thank you very much AlpheccaStars,

So you would say that (c) does not mean the same as (a), am I correct?

Many Thanks.

I would interpret it as the same meaning, but it is not a very natural use of "such."
