Such a thing

Dear all,
as far as I know you say "there is no such thing". Why then the sentence: "Why did you say such a thing:' uses the article? Is this sentence correct?

No in your sentence is a pronoun (at least in my terminology) and you never use an article with it: I have no book. I saw no boy. Cf.

I have no book.
I saw no boy.
Cf. The Swedish: Jag har ingen bok. (No article there either. Related languages.)

Your sentence is correct.
