Such a popularity or such popularity?

Hi,

A student wrote this sentence.

"Your tweets sound for me as you haven't expected such a popularity"

Do you think it should read

"Your tweets sound to me as if you hadn't expected such a popularity"

Could it be "such popularity" and is there a reason for this?

Thanks,

Dave
