succor

"But the odours of domesticity seemed to soften her edges a little, adding an element of succor to her unyielding presence." This said about a very stern woman.

Does the element of succor means a note of harmlessness or mercifulness? Or something completely different?

Thanks!

Someone who provides succor provides help or relief. So this "unyielding woman" has an element of someone who might help you out after all.

Hi guys,

I've never seen 'succour' spelled as 'succor', so it looks very odd to me. I guess it's just another case of American vs. British spelling?

Best wishes, Clive
