Vocabulary

succeed to

I often see "succeed to the throne" or "succeed to someone's position".
How about "succeed to a company or a fortune" ?

For example, are the sentences below correct ?

> John succeeded to his father's company when he was still 18 years old.
> John succeeded to a vast fortune when he was still 18 years old.

Thank you in advance.

In the first sentence, I think one would, as you explained earlier, succede to a position, not the company. The second sentence doesn't sound at all natural to me. Inherited a vast fortune (better).
