Subtleties of plular form

I was not satisfied with my colleagues' answers so I want to put this to you. In the following sentence:

"The rising mercury levels puts you at risk..."

I expected the "puts" to be "put" but my colleagues don't seem to think so. So which is correct "puts" or "put"? Please enlighten me.
