substitution of for

Dear all,

if I say: "Substitution of market economy for socialist economy" what is replaced by what?

Thank you.

Top answer

There was a socialist economy to start with, which was later replaced by a market economy. If you used by instead of for in your sentence it would reverse the meaning.

So there is no analogy to "flee sth for sth". For example:

He fled Syria for Iraq.
