Substitute word plz

Dear teachers, plz let me know, if there is any word which can mean following-

i.e. if I say, The cards are ***** him.
Is there any word which if I use in place of ****, It will mean that he is having/keeping/holding the cards.

Or, All the documents were **** Mr. Pal.
After putting which word at ****, the sentence will mean that Mr. Pal was having the documents so if anybody wanted those documents, he had to go to Mr.Pal and ask for it.

Please reply.

You can use a passive form such as "held by" or "kept by". Maybe you already know that but want to know if it's possible to say it with one word? If so, I don't think there is any active verb that would fit, but "with" would work.

Thank u GPY for giving instant reply. You are right, I searched for "Active verb". If there is no "one word" , then how can you say this sentence in active voice by using two or more words? Plz suggest me. and using "with" doesn't sound well always. (Thpse documents were with Mr. Pal).

You want "cards" and "documents" to be the subject of an active verb? I can't think of any common and obvious way of doing this. I suppose "reside with" may work in the "documents" sentence in some cases. "live with" can sometimes be used colloquially with inanimate things. "remain with" and "belong to" make sense but have slightly more specific meanings.

Of course, to make active senten

Generally I used "cards" or "documents" as object as you said. I searched for active verb to make those subject. Your suggestions were really helpful. Thank you dear.
