Substitute oneself into the character?

When I read a story and imagine that I am one of the characters in the story, how do I say it in English? Should I say "I substitute myself into one of the character"?

In a similar vein, the writer would say that you identified with the character. When you read fiction, you see the story from the point of view of one or another of the characters. Girls reading Romeo and Juliet don't normally feel what Romeo is feeling as much as they do Juliet. You don't really imagine that you are the character; identifying is unconscious.
