Substitute for "left out" and "outright"

I am writing an academic essay and "left out" and "outright" seem rather informal to me. Is there a better word to substitute it? These are my sentences:

By checking their understanding, students will not feel left out and the lesson can proceed.

Her students were never criticised outright for their mistakes.

left out = excluded

outright = openly (outright is ok)

(Or your can simply say "...never criticised for their mistakes.")

"Directly" could be used in place of "outright".
