Vocabulary

subordinate/secondary role

Hello,
What is the difference between them in your opinion? Secondary means less important to me, but a subordinate role is probably slightly different. A few examples: "He places women in a subordinate role.", "Oared vessels remained in use in northern waters for a long time, though in subordinate role and in particular circumstances." These are just two sentences I found. How would you differentiate?

Yes, I am familiar with the other meaning of subordinate Emotion: smile. I assume that means that they can be interchanged in these sentences, no?
