Does anyone know why 'submarine sandwich' so named submarine?

Thanks,

submarine sandwich - called either submarine or sub.

Maybe it's because they are served in a baguette not slices of bread, and a baguette is submarine shaped if you use your imagination a bit!

Hi Nona,

I think that's the reason (must have read it somewhere). And I think there's also a toothpick to hold it together, like the emerging part of a submarine.
