Dear all,
Just a little question that is bothering me.
Which of the following would you consider to be more correct:
(1) If it were raining, and I were without an umbrella, would you lend me one?
(2) If it were raining, and I was without an umbrella, would you lend me one?
Thank you in advance!
#1 is, by strict rules of traditional grammar, correct, and #2 is not. However, in present-day English #2 is perfectly acceptable.
