Subjunctive mood

The hardest part was still to come though. Every year the number of climbers killed on Everest increases, with most deaths occurring on the descent. It is hardly surprising then, that Bear should feel a great sense of relief when he eventually got back to base camp.

Is it a subjunctive mood? Can "should feel" be replaced by "feels"?

I would not call it that. It's a periphrastic subjunctive, i.e., a variant of the subjunctive that uses "evaluative should".

Do you find "should feel" here grammatical? One friend of mine believes it should be either "felt" or "should have felt".
