Subjunctive

Hello:

I would think a direct approach would be best.

Is this some kind of subjunctive? I am not quite sure about either of these two woulds.

The second would is a simple conditional. The first one is a modal of some kind that in my mind indicates lack of conviction, and not the best of English grammar, although quite common.
