Subjuctives

"As if and As though: The verb form here depends on whether the situation is true or unreal.

E.g: He acts as if he were in charge. (Unreal. He isn't in charge)

You look as if you're having second thoughts. (True. He is having second thoughts)

I feel as if an express train had hit me. (It didn't hit me)"

But i think in these two sentences, they're rather unusual:

Jack doesn't know all the answers, though he pretends to.

=> Jack acts as if/as though he KNOWS all the answers.

The fact is that Jack doesn't know, so the situation here is unreal. But why does KNOWS stand here? It is real, isn't it?

I think it must be KNEW.

Hope to hear your explanation!

Hi, If you are told that Jack doesn't know all the answers in advance, then I agree that the sentence should read 'Jack acts as if he knew all the answers' . However, in spoken language you might hear people using knows as well to denote the same intent. Jack pretended to know all the answers, and therefore seemed proficient in solving the questions.
