Subject/verb agreement

I am interested to know whether I am understanding subject/verb agreement properly... or not!

Obviously `have' is required in: `Remote control of children's toys and remote control of household gadgets have been demonstrated'

but, what happens when we reduce the sentence to remove unnecessary words: `Remote control of children's toys and household gadgets has been demonstrated'?

These sentences both mean the same thing, but my instinct is to use `has' in the second sentence. Is this correct?

And, is the reason that in the first sentence the subject reads as two things, whereas in the second sentence the subject is `remote control'?

Thank you for any help
