I have made up the sentences below.

(1) Working in an unsanitized environment subjects people to viral infection.

(2) Working in an unsanitized environment will subject people to viral infection.

In addition to the sentence without modal verbs (subjects people to ...), you can use several different modal verbs in that sentence.

may subject people to ...
might subject people to ...
can subject people to ...
