Determiners are said to "mark" nouns. That is to say, you know a determiner will be followed by a noun.

So your pattern: noun marker, noun, prepositional phrase is exemplified by any of these: (the first word is the noun marker)

the cat in the hat
a man in his bed
my brother with his train set
John's book on the table
every student in the class
