Subject/Object Question

An acquantaince of mine posted the following sentence publicly:

"Stupid people should not be allowed to walk on the same sidewalk as I."

I was thrown off by the use of the subject pronoun "I" in this scenario because it just sounds awkward. Given the condescending tone of the sentence, I wanted to verify if this person was indeed correct.

"Stupid people should not be allowed to walk on the same sidewalk as I (walk on)."

However, in casual conversation, "me" is frequently used.
