Subject-verb disagreement

Consider this sentence:

She thought that reading romantic novels was a frivolous pastime.

Shouldn't the verb be "were" instead of "was" in the sentence? Can u explain why or why not?

Plus can u give me an example of a simple "frivolous" comment...
