Grammar

subject-verb agrrement

1. One of your friends is welcome.

2. Either of your friends are/is welcome.

1 sentence is correct. But I am confused in case of 2 sentence. Here which one is used as subject "either" or "friends"?

Top answer

taruns1008 2. Either* of your friends *are/is welcome. Either assumes you're talking about just two of your friends, and either selects one of those.

  • taruns1008 2.
  • Either* of your friends *are/is welcome.
  • Either assumes you're talking about just two of your friends, and either selects one of those.
  • So, as we're talking of just one here, 'is' fits in nicely.
