Subject verb agreement sample

Hi Everyone,

I've just read the following sentence from an online newspaper.

'Debris and bodies was spread over an area of between six and eight square kilometres, the AFP news agency said.'

Every now and again I do question this type of example. My concern is about the first part of the sentence. Shouldn't it read:

'Debris and bodies were spread....?'

Thanks
