Subject-verb agreement question

Hi! I'm kinda stuck on this sentence and would greatly appreciate some help:

1- "This legendary figure and his heroic deeds at the battle was developed in the form of an epic work."

2- "This legendary figure and his heroic deeds at the battle were developed in the form of an epic work."

I feel that the second one is correct but, having read the sentence about 10 times already, am starting to doubt myself.

Thanks!
