Subject verb agreement question

Hi wondering if you could help me with the following sentence. Not sure if it should be a singular or plural verb?

In many horror movies, there [is or are] a wise character, a scary character, and a heroic character.

Not sure if the verb should be 'is' or 'are'?

thanks.
