Subject-verb agreement - help or helps?

"I hope this e-mail, along with its attachments, helps clear up this conundrum."

or

"I hope this e-mail, along with its attachments, help clear up this conundrum."

Which is correct? Please provide reasoning. Thank you in advance!

The phrase 'along with its attachments' is just parenthetical.

"I hope this e-mail (along with its attachments) helps clear up this conundrum."

If you replace the commas with brackets, I think it is quite obvious that you should use 'helps'.(this email ... helps...)
