Subject verb agreement

Hi Everyone,

Long time no post.

I saw the following sentence online, but I have an issue with it. Here is the sentence:

'A complement is a word or group of words that describe or rename the subject.'

Shouldn't the sentence read:

'A complement is a word or group of words that describes or renames the subject.'

I know that that last noun in a clause determines verb usage, but isn't subject - complement - the driver?

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

CC
