subject verb agreement

Hi

It is one of the oldest countries in the world.

Its customs,values and tradition makes it a unique country as well.

I think makes is fine as plural subject are related to one entity,the country.

That's incorrect. You have a plural subject, as you said. Therefore, use "make."

I have a question on that

In subject verb agreement we learn that even though the subject is plural it takes a singular verb if the plural subject is related to one person.

His courage and determination was praised.

Please give your comments on this.

I consider "was" incorrect in that sentence and would use "were" instead.

I think it was one of the pointers under Subject Verb Agreement in one of the most popular grammar books which I used to learn grammar many years ago. I do not possess it now.
I do know the name of the book but will check with it once again before I give the name.

CalifJimI think, instead, that it's a matter of two related nouns that can be thought of as a unit. "courage and determination" sounds like such a combination to me so the singular verb (was) doesn't really bother me.
Actually this I was very much aware.

We have all come across this sort of thing. Its simply that teechr does not think that 'courage and determination' are close enough to fall into the 'combination' category; CJ does. I veer towards teeechr's thinking,but I would not be terribly upset by a singular verb. There are no hard and fast rules here..
