Subject Verb agreement

Good examples like playing the piano shows that music is important.

Is "shows" correct? or "show"?
Isn't there a rule that says follow the noun closest to the verb?

show'. There is certainly not such a rule; the rule is that the grammatical subject determines the number of the verb. However, in casual English we often allow notional concord (s-V conceptual agreement) or proximal concord (s-V agreement with the nearest noun) affect out sensibilities.

It should be 'examples...show'.
