Subject verb agreement

Hi, I would like to ask a question on SVA.

For example:

A portion of industries and firms has closed down due to recession in 2009, and this resulted an increase in unemployment rate.

Thanks!

Cheers,

Hello, Jennifer. Well, the grammatical subject is 'portion', which calls for 'has', while the notional/proximal subject is 'industries and firms' which suggests 'have'. In any such case, I suggest that you recast your sentences to ease the discomfort: Some industries and firms have closed down due to recession in 2009, and this resulted an increase in unemployment rate.
