Subject-verb agreement

Hi there!

Which of these two sentences is correct?

One thing I couldn't imagine living without is dogs

One thing I couldn't imagine living without are dogs.

Thanks! I've read that both are correct but I wasn't sure.

Probably because of "dogs", which is plural. Nevertheless, "one" is the subject, and wherever possible you want to make the verb agree with the subject.
