Subject verb agreement

Hi,

I just read a Rule where it said the Subject and the Verb must agree in terms of Number and person.

So according to it

Alex read a book
is wrong because the singular subject is not in agreement with the plural verb read. and it should be written as

Alex reads a book.

But in the sentense

Alex read several books.
We have the same Singular Subject but how can the plural verb read be used?

Is the Subject here changed to "Several books"? or is this because of the Tense change ?

Am i missing something here?
