Subject-verb Agreement

Nearly 5000 fans showed up, which shows that soccer is, indeed, popular in the United States.

I did an exercise on the net, and I got it wrong for this question. I thought since the sentence has "5000 fans", the verb should be plural. is it because "nearly 5000 fans showed up" is stating a fact, therefore "show" must be singular?

and this sentence too:

Both candidates oppose increased defense spending. Neither of the two candidates oppose the war in Iraq.

why is it oppose and not opposes?

Top answer

Yes. That's right. kindaichi000 Neither of the two candidates oppose the war in Iraq.

  • Yes.
  • That's right.
  • kindaichi000 Neither of the two candidates oppose the war in Iraq.
  • why W hy is it " oppose " and not " opposes " ?
  • According to most sources, it should be opposes , so I don't know why that internet site said it should be oppose .
