Subject verb agreement

His choice of readings is always great, and his lectures are stimulating.

Shouldn't this be 'are'? as in, the whole "his choice of readings" becomes the subject therefore the verb needs to be 'are'. No?

In your sentence the word 'choice' and not 'readings' is the subject of the verb 'be'. The third person singular form 'is' is therefore needed.
