subject verb agreement?

Okay guys, a sentence which is confounding me for some reason:

"Thousands of years of culture are clearly reflected in the day to day activities of the people of this place."
Is the sentence correct or is this the correct version?
"
Thousands of years of culture is clearly reflected in the day to day activities of the people of this place."

It would be nice if you would not format such simple sentences. They are difficult to locate in the mess of code. Both is and are will work; I prefer are to accentuate the length of time.
