Subject Verb Agreement

Should the following sentence use was or were?

Who could have known that their journey today was/were part of a wonderful plan that was made?

It's possible that your native language requires a past subjunctive in this case, and that may be what you are trying to duplicate in English. English does not use that construction. Ordinary agreement ("journey was") is used in this case.
