Subject-verb

The earliest written account about pineapple (is, was) by Christopher Columbus.

I'm thinking that maybe the corect verb is 'was'. However, I'm not really sure why. I just thought it sounded better than using is in the sentence.

Is my answer correct? Why? Why not?
