Subject-verb

Hi

Please clarify the subject-verb agreement in the following sentence:

"The duplex examination together with the clinical examination of the donor site tissue volume form the two main factors in the preoperative decision making."

Thanks a lot for your help in this regard!

Hi guys,

Just a small comment that I don't think the verb 'form' works well in this sentence. Can one simply say 'are'?

Best wishes, Clive

Hi,

I was pondering over Welkins' response, as well as Clive's, and was thinking over the question of whether or not the original poster's sentence requires a singular verb or a plural verb and reached the conclusion that the verb needs to be in the plural form.

Like this,

This together with that form the two main parts.

Any inputs on my response are welcome

I agree with Welkins-it's a phrasal preposition. When you see "together with" that means something is being added with another-the result is, of course, that you end up with a plural (so "form" is correct).

You can check this by adding the subjects together: "The duplex examination" AND "the clinical examination of the doner site tissue volume" together, giving you the subject
