Subject, Predicate, and Predicate nominative quantity agreement

I was writing a sentence and I came across an issue....
"The most common form of writing is logs."

I debated over "writing is logs" verses "writing are logs".

A friend on facebook told me that the verb must agree with the predicate nominative. So he told me to do one of two things...

"forms of writing are logs" OR "form of writings are logs"

I'm not sure if I agree with the 2nd one...
If the sentence is changed to:

"The most common book of secrets are journals."

It doesn't make sense. It should either be...

"The most common form of writing is a log." OR "The most common forms of writing are logs."

Right?!
