subject or object case?

The rumor was spread by him (he) and I Emotion: it wasnt me. I would say "him" and "me", but the answer given in the exercise is "he" and "I". I am confused. Thank you for your help.

I'm confused too... It should be "by him and me", you can't have the subject case after "by". (If you use the active voice, it is "He and I spread the rumor)

The trick is to break it apart.
try it with both "him" and "me", each by itself

Me spread the rumor

Him spread the rumor

You would not say either of these would you?

You would say:

I spread the rumor

He spread the rumor

so: He and I spread the rumor
