Subject omission in 'if' clause.

It yeilds a better understanding of Melville's works if read perceptively.

It = Delaney's book about Melville's work.

Q) I don't know this type of subject omission there. How can the subject be omitted where there seems no clue in main cluase?

Ah.. I got a glimpse of it. Does it happen to be "~~ if it is read perceptively"? If so, does this happen often?(formal, informal..)
