Subject of this sentence

Hi there,

I know that understanding whether to use was or were depends on the subject of a sentence and to find that I need to check the verb, but I can't find either here:

'One of the key features of the building was the large spans of 11.5m.'

I believe 'were' should be used here as there is more than one slab but I can't be 100% and can't find any definitive answer elsewhere.

Any help would be fantastic.

I'm a non-native and I have to admit that I came across different opinions about it. Some state that there should be "was" to agree the singular subject ("One of...) with the verb, others say that you may use "were" to agree it with the plural complement.

Thanks for your response. Perhaps the disagreement of the sources suggests that either option is acceptable?

One of the key features the building is... [ "is" should be used because of "One". I wouldn't use "was" ].
