Subject-object agreement

Dear Grammarians,

I was wondering if you could help me. Which of the following sentences is correct?

The boardwalks along banks of the river are great places for taking romantic walks.

The boardwalks along the banks of the river are a great place for taking romantic walks.

The thing is they both seem idiomatic enough to me, but the second one actually seems more correct as 'the boardwalks' is used as a kind of collective. I was wondering if you had any opinions on this, or indeed if there are any subject-object agreement rules which need to be adhered to ( I can't seem to find any comprehensive reference to this online or in Chicago)?
