Subject and verb

Are these sentences grammatically correct? If not, why?

1. Asia's short and long-term future is highly uncertain and will remain so until the problems are solved.
Is the subject here the underlined part and the verb is the bolded part?

Is this the same as saying this thus the singular verb?
"Asia's short-term future is highly uncertain and long-term future is highly uncertain and will remain so until the problems are solved." ?

2. Asia's short and long-term future are highly uncertain and will remain so until the problems are solved.
Is the subject here the underlined part and the verb is the bolded part?

Thanks!

I feel that 1. is correct and that the singular verb is correctly applied. There is one future (and it is broken down into smaller units for reference).

(In contrast, one would break ‘goals’ down into short-term and long-term, and they would be plural.)
